BeleniX is a *NIX distribution that is built using the OpenSolaris source base.
It is currently a live CD but is intended to grow into a complete distribution that can be installed to hard disk. BeleniX is developed at the India Engineering Centre of Sun Microsystems in Bangalore, the silicon capital of India.
Changes for BeleniX 0.5.1:
- This release bundles the Nvidia 3D accelerated driver. So one would get 3D acceleration on a range of Nvidia cards (Quadro and GeForce). This will enable nice stuff like compositing effects in Xfce (transparency and shadows).
- Updated to OpenSolaris build 52. Among a variety of changes this build features the addition of HAL and System D-BUS daemon, iSCSI support for ZFS This build also includes kernel support for DRI with Intel i915/i815 drivers. However the Xorg support for DRI will be coming in the next release of BeleniX.
- Added a new Xorg configuration utility based on Perl-Curses. This allows one to easily play with tweaking the Xorg configuration without having to manually edit the config file. This feature was requested several times in the past.
- Updated to Firefox 2.0 and Thunderbird 1.5.0.8. This also fixes the problem with rendering the THunderbird GUI. These releases are the binaries from the contributed builds by the SUN China Beijing team.
- Updated to Koffice 1.6.0 which fixes some issues with the earlier Koffice version.
- This release also bundles the C++ runtime libraries from the SUN Studio Suite. Thus Java now works out of the box on BeleniX (though it is not yet included).
- Fixed the problematic bug that used to cause a boot-up error after harddisk install in the 0.5 release.
- Fixed several other bugs including a problem with the zone creation script. KDE screen lock earlier used to cause an unlockable screen - this has been fixed.
