BeleniX is a *NIX distribution that is built using the OpenSolaris source base.
It is currently a live CD but is intended to grow into a complete distribution that can be installed to hard disk. BeleniX is developed at the India Engineering Centre of Sun Microsystems in Bangalore, the silicon capital of India.
Changes for BeleniX 0.5:
- The significant feature of this release is support for read-only mounting and accessing both Ext2FS and NTFS partitions on either Primary or Logical Partitions. This was based on the original Mount-NTFS work done by Martin Rosenau. That codebase was significantly enhanced and Ext2FS mount support added via libext2fs from e2fsprogs.
- Updated to a recent pre-build48 snapshot of OpenSolaris. This contains many bugfixes, enhancements and new features.
- The utilities from NTFSprogs and E2fsprogs are integrated into BeleniX. These were release earlier as SVR4 packages.
- The utilities from NTFSprogs provide read-write access to NTFS Primary partitions as well.
- The Partition Table Viewer utility has been integrated. Execute "prtpart -help" for a detailed guide. This utility and the above ones provide useful recovery facilities for harddisk partitions.
- A small GUI written in Tcl/Tk is available to access and mount harddisk partitions at the click of a mouse. Double-Click on the Desktop Icon titles "Hard Disk Partitions" to start it. Virtual devices numbered from p5 onwards are displayed to allow access to logical partitions.
- XFce has been upgraded to 4.4 Beta2. This now sports a new-look with desktop icons and a new file manager called Thunar and various other new tools. Visit the XFce site http://www.xfce.org for more details.
- Firefox and Thunderbird have been upgraded to 1.5.0.7. Known issues: Search in document does not work in Firefox. THunderbird does not render GUI properly if /usr is not writable, that is it is running from CDROM. Running from harddisk works fine.
- Upgraded a variety of drivers and kernel modules. Also made various small fixes like creating a proper .bashrc and .bash_profile, updating the default MANPATH etc.
- The Installer has been enhanced to allow creating additional user accounts apart from "root". Experimental support has been added to create a ZFS Filesysem for the home directory partition. More extensive ZFS support will be added in the upcoming releases.
- The JDK has been removed from this release and will be included in the DVD version planned in the near future.
