Freespire is a community-driven, Linux-based operating system that combines the best that free, open source software has to offer (community driven, freely distributed, open source code, etc.), but also provides users the choice of including proprietary codecs, drivers and applications as they see fit.
With Freespire, the choice is yours as to what software is installed on your computer, with no limitations or restrictions placed on that choice. How you choose to maximize the performance of your computer is entirely up to you.
Install:
- Advanced Install "next" button is off screen
- Solution: Tab past the MBR selection to the next (hidden) selection, then hit enter.
- No CD eject screen
- CD doesn't auto eject after install
- No upgrade path available from Freespire 1.0
Boot:
- Automatic boot menu management does not always work. Do not install if you are not experienced at repairing Grub configurations and MBRs.
- No bootsplash support.
- Boots into verbose (not silent w/ splash) mode.
CNR is not included
Apt repository is pointing to Debian Sid, this should be updated to Freespire repositories in the next release.
LiveCD boot opens KDM login. Following steps required to login:
- Ctrl+Alt+F4
- At the freespirelive login prompt: root
- At the command prompt:# passwd
Enter new UNIX password: set password (Retype)
- # exit
- Ctrl+Alt+F7
- At the KDM login: root (and password established above)
- Changing clock during LiveCD start-up wizard results in a KDE Control Module crash
- Restart Computer via Live CD, halts at power management
- Ctrl+Alt+Del ineffective (results in Slab: xxxxx kB)
Sound:
- Sound slider in startup wizard is not operational
- Sound for quick-Switched User accounts inoperativeund
Menus are not organized
- NVU not in a menu but included in the build.
- Diagnostic Report no in a menu included in the build. Run "sysreport" from command line.
List of missing packages:
- Firewall configuration
- Diagnostic report UI
- Modem drivers
- ISP configuration programs
- BitTorrent
- Network Control Panel (wireless networking must be manually configured information below)
- Launch Terminal Program (Konsole), at the command prompt enter "sudo iwconfig"
- Look at the iwconfig output, and determine which interface (ethx) is wireless.
- From the command prompt "sudo ifconfig [interface] up
- From the command prompt "sudo iwconfig [interface] [essid x] [enc e]" x: ESSID name; e: encryption key.

# iwconfig ethx essid linksys (non-encrypted)
- From the command prompt "sudo dhclient [interface]"
- For more detail information about how to set up wireless networking, please run "man iwconfig"
- Note: Some wireless cards will not accept the ifconfig/iwconfig.
Grahics missing:
- Login Manager
- Launch menu button
- Miscellaneous icons
No ACPI support. No hibernation.
Synaptics driver not loaded into System Tray
Changing clock in the control panel results in a KDE Control Module crash.
Flash player is version 9 Beta.
